Yellow-billed Nuthatch
Sitta solangiae
- epic
- 42 km/h
- Near Threatened
Patchy range across peaks in Vietnam, Laos, and Hainan. Creeps headfirst down tree bark like gravity is optional.
- Habitat
- Primary and logged subtropical/tropical moist evergreen broadleaf and pine forest at roughly 900–2,500 m elevation in hill and mountain country; shows some tolerance of secondary/logged forest.
- Fun fact
- The Yellow-billed Nuthatch is named for its bright yellow bill and matching yellow eye-ring — a striking departure from the black or grey bills of most other Sitta nuthatches — set off against a bright blue back/wings, purplish face and black eyebrow.
- Range
- Restricted-range Indochinese/Hainan endemic occurring in 3–4 disjunct areas: northern Vietnam (Fan Si Pan Range, NW Tonkin), southern Vietnam (Da Lat/Langbian Plateau, SC Annam, with possible extension to the Kon Tum Plateau), southeastern Laos (Xe Sap region), and southern Hainan Island, China. Not confirmed in Cambodia (corrected from first-pass draft, which erroneously extended the range there — no IUCN, BirdLife/HBW, or GBIF source supports a Cambodian record).
- Diet
- Insectivorous bark/trunk gleaner ("invertivore-bark" trophic niche) — forages for invertebrates on tree bark, trunks and branches in typical nuthatch fashion.
- Size
- 0.13 m
- Wingspan
- 0.21 m
- Lifespan
- 7.8 years
