  • Not Evaluated

Somehow the fastest courier in existence. Nobody knows how. Nobody questions the chicken.

Population
~25–33 billion worldwide (Wikipedia cites >26.5 billion as of 2023, with 50+ billion produced annually for consumption); most numerous bird species on Earth, but a domesticated population, not a wild one subject to census
Habitat
Human-managed environments — farms, backyards, and agricultural/urban settings worldwide; its wild ancestor, the Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus), natively inhabits thick secondary forest, forest-edge scrub, and dense vegetation in South and Southeast Asia, foraging in open areas at dawn/dusk
Fun fact
Domestic chickens establish a linear social hierarchy known as a "pecking order" (first formally described by researcher Thorleif Schjelderup-Ebbe in 1921) and can visually recognize and remember over a hundred individual flock members.
Range
Global — domesticated roughly 8,000 years ago, most likely in Southeast Asia (Thailand), coinciding with early rice cultivation, then dispersed to every inhabited continent via human trade and migration
Diet
Omnivorous: seeds, grain, and plant matter supplemented with insects, worms, and occasional small vertebrates (lizards, small snakes, young mice) when foraging; commercial birds are fed formulated grain-based feed
Size
0.7 m
Wingspan
0.8 m
Lifespan
8 years
