European Storm-Petrel
Hydrobates pelagicus
- common
- 28 km/h
- Starter
- Least Concern
Smaller than a sparrow but spends its entire life at sea, pattering across waves. Your message lives offshore.
- Population
- approx. 430,000-519,999 mature individuals (BirdLife International/IUCN Red List estimate)
- Habitat
- Highly pelagic outside the breeding season, spending almost all its life over open ocean far from land; nests colonially and nocturnally in burrows, rock crevices, and stone walls on remote, predator-free sea cliffs and rocky offshore islands.
- Fun fact
- Despite weighing only about as much as a house sparrow (~25-28 g), the European Storm-Petrel is remarkably long-lived for its size: the British Trust for Ornithology's official longevity record for the species, set via ringing recoveries, stands at 38 years and 17 days, though typical life expectancy at breeding age is closer to 11 years.
- Range
- North Atlantic and Mediterranean; ~90% of breeders concentrated in the Faroe Islands, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Iceland, with a Mediterranean subspecies (H. p. melitensis) around Malta, Sicily, and the Balearic Islands. Non-breeding range extends to seas off western and southern Africa (including Namibia/South Africa).
- Diet
- Small fish, squid, planktonic crustaceans, jellyfish fragments, and fish oil/offal; forages mostly at night by scent, often pattering its feet on the water surface while feeding, and readily follows fishing boats for scraps.
- Size
- 0.16 m
- Wingspan
- 0.38 m
- Lifespan
- 38 years
